If we're talking ARR and HW story, between a few dozen and a hundred or so hours. At a casual pace and doing no side quests, 2 months or so. One of the common things you'll see in another thread asking veteran players what they'd tell their past selves to do is to slow down with the story, to better understand and therefore enjoy them. Of the 150ish quests HW is made of I have managed to blow through 50 of them so far this last week without much issue. By the end of ARR, story ends up picking up so much which makes you want to try the new expansions, that btw has half to none of those fetch quests you faced on ARR. Vanilla story picks up a little around 45+ and then post 50 it gets better and better. it's such a good concept and matches the awesome graphics of the areas etc. Took me 12 hours to do the quests between AAR conclusion and heavensward and that was skipping cutscenes. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. Suggestion: just do msq. majority will be spent in ARR story. Then HW starts and the story is mostly entertaining throughout both HW and SB. But I did all side quests and didn't rush so it can certainly be done faster. However I have done the story 4 times, so I was prepared. Last chunk of it has a lot of filler, ie: go somewhere to talk to someone then go back to where you came from types, that doesn't take long but feels like it does. For me, the story picked up in Heavensward. I've just recently been skipping everything to get through it faster. FFXIV did not really pick up until heavensward. Also there are several characters who you meet early on who will come back into the story, so while it seems slow right now it's building a foundation for the later story to build on. The way that the ARR story ends was clearly not a definite conclusion because the Garleans and Ascians are still at large. This game has an extensive main story that rivals the console FFs. Just look up a story summary of everything that happens before you meet Lady Iceheart, and start watching again there. Then you get into the lull of ARR part 2 (Seventh Astral Era quests), which the entire first half of that is just utterly boring. So if this reviewer was like many players they absolutely despised the game's story progression in the beginning it could of been an issue of leaving a bad taste in their mouth. A long ass time. So yeah both expansions are really good and the pace changes a lot. If you plan on watching cutscenes and plays regularly everyday it'll take you around 2 months. Starting with "A Realm Reborn" and the expansions include "Heavensward", "Stormblood", and "Shadowbringers"! I leveled an alt from 1-60 as a Summoner, using everything to my advantage like the friendship/ring and eastern set(until I unlocked POTD after 3 dungeons/saved them for daily duty roulette). I also suggest unsyncing some of the level 50 dungeons, as their queues are longer, and people don't tend to know mechanics. Personally, I would play to the end of ARR skipping nothing. Disclaimer: everything's subjective, this is my opinion. It's not too bad provided you ask around if you're unsure where to go next. It'll take you a month, maybe a week less. ARR base game MSQ pace is strange. Hopefully the clears up the state of the ending of FFXIV Shadowbringers a bit as of launch day. We need FFXIV to end in a similar fashion to how XI recently did, to basically bring all of the game's world and story to a full complete closure and have no more expansions. FFXIV no longer has to ease you at this point and it cuts to the chase even as it unravels a new story. As for the story, vanilla story is pretty boring. When they redesigned this game a lot of aspects were great (the jobs, the Coils etc) but the MSQ was clearly not fantastic. I got to 3.5 in about 7 days, however I leveled two jobs simultaneously, which I'm sure slowed me down a bit. SB is quite good midway to the end. By the time I hit heavensward, I was 54. To answer your question, yes, the story does pick up but not until like 5 patches later of content. ARR's story telling was ok at best, leaning on the bad side.
